A'IBOM ASSEMBLY OKAYS APPOINTMENT OF STATE CHIEF JUDGE

 Williams Akpabio - Information Unit (AKHA) Uyo The 7th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has today cleared and confirmed Justice Ekaete Obot as the substantive  Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State. The House resolved this after due consideration of the letter forwarded to the House of Assembly by his Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel in line with Section 271(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended. Recalled that His Lordship Justice Ekaete Obot  took Oaths of Office and Allegiance, as the acting State Chief Judge by Governor Udom Emmanuel following the retirement of Justice Godwin Abraham on Wednesday, 30th June 2021. Meanwhile, the clerk of the House Mrs Mandu Umoren was directed to communicate the House Resolution to His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in its plenary today Tuesday 21st September, 2021 passes amended Traditional Rulers Law 2020 into law. this follows the report presented by Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudo - Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency on "A Bill for a Law to amend the Traditional Rulers Law 2020 and for other matters connected therewith." With the unanimous voiced vote support of members, the Bill was read the third time and passed to Law. According to the Bill, Amendment of Cap 134 LAKS 2000 is expected to correct the long title to Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers and tenure of the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers to pave way for second term after the first two years in office at the discreation of the Governor and on the approval of the House of Assembly. His removal based on the report of the Ad-hoc Committee on the impeachment of Abasiama Etokakpan as Vice Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Council as presented at the floor of the house. The 7-Man Panel set up by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to investigate the impeachment process initiated by the Oruk Anam Legislative Council commenced hearing on Thursday. The Panel, during its maiden hearing at the Conference Room of the Assembly, acknowledged receipt of petitions and impeachment notice on Mr. Abasiama Etukakpan by the Leader of Oruk Anam Legislative Council, Hon. Sunday Festus. Abasiama Etokakpan as the substantive Vice Chairman of Oruk Anam Local Government Council.  This follows the report of the House Committee on local government and Chieftaincy Affairs on an act of complete illegality and mess on democratic tenets represented to the house on the purported impeachment of Hon Abasiama Etokakpan from office. Presenting the Committee's report at the plenary, Rt. Hon. Mark Esset  pointed out that Hon. Abasiama Etukakpan was in the first instance, not served any official notice of impeachment. Godwin Ekpo, member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency pursuant to order 3 Rule 1 of the Standing Order of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (6th Edition). The motion highlighted that, the number of available traffic signs, traffic lights and speed signs on our road are far less than required for the safety of drivers and pedestrians and that continuous neglect of adequate traffic signs, traffic lights and speed signs/limits in our roads can be very dangerous as proper road safety information will not be communicated to road users to maintain order and reduce accidents.
