HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY OKAYS RECTIFICATION OF ACCEPTABLE MAP OF AKWA IBOM STATE

Williams Akpabio - Information Unit (AKHA), Uyo.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly today resolved to rectify map of Akwa Ibom State, this follows a motion moved at the floor of the House by Rt. Hon. David Lawrence, member representing Eket State Constituency under Order three Rule one of the Standing Order of the House.

The House resolved that the Surveyor-General of Akwa Ibom State should take immediate and appropriate steps to produce generally acceptable, approved and gazzetted map for the state and ensure that it is approved and gazzetted.

That  all obnoxious, obsolete and inappropriate enactment or such processes concerning affected and relating to proper mapping should be urgently reviewed.

The House considered that in producing the official map of Akwa Ibom State, the Surveyor General should be guided by history, such as the facts that the creation of Akwa Ibom State in 1987 out of the then Cross River State did not in any way alter the landscape of the coastal local government Area of the then Cross River State which ended up in Akwa Ibom State, Court pronouncements and good conscience rather than any contestable piece of military imposed law that is out of sync with reality such as the 1978 Cross River State Traditional Rulers Edict and its offshoots.

And that, Maps necessarily must give information in orderly and acceptable form, it must be Clear, easy to interpret and not disputed. Map generally must maintain a unique and definite form; whereas in our dear State Akwa Ibom, we do not even have an authentic or acceptable or reliable map which has been gazzetted or in any way authenticated by the governor, the Court or this Honourable House for use as the official Map of Akwa Ibom State delineating the boundaries of the Local Government Area of the State.

The house alarmed that some undermocratic, outrageous and misadvised anti-people enactment like some provisions of the Traditional  Rulers Edict 1978, and other related Executive Orders, etc. has consequently led to squabbles and litigations due unavailability of concise and generally acceptable map.

Meanwhile, the speaker of the 7th Assembly Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey directed the Clerk of the House Mrs Mandu Umoren to communicate the House Resolution to the appropriate quarters.

However, the House adjourned its plenary to reconvene on Tuesday 21st September, 2021 at 10am prompt.
