Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, the Honorable Speaker of the 7th Assembly, the 12th Speaker and a two term member of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly popularly known as "The Working Speaker" is indeed, a noiseless achiever.
Born on 30th August, 1978 and hails from Ekim Enen Village in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
He attended Christ the King Nursery and Primary School and had his secondary education at Uyo High School; and Senior Science College Abak. The apt lawmaker graduated from University of Uyo with a Degree in Chemistry. He also studied and obtained another Degree in Sociology and Anthropology as well as Master’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology; Master’s Degree in Development Studies all from the same University.
As a good leader, his leadership qualities and exemplary life has been that of inspiration, development, empowerment and motivation,
As a positive thinker, his actions has always remained positive to promote the greatest good for the greatest number.
As a working Speaker, He is an embodiment of achievements, an inspiring lawmaker, a leader par excellence, mentor, creative thinker, and a role model. He has proactively renovated the Assembly Complex, VIP Lounge, the Assembly Conference Hall and the General Reception, etc. Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey has completly turnaround the ambience of the Assembly complex within one legislative year as the Speaker of the 7th Assembly.
This sterling qualities stands Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey out as a man of the people. His unassuming and humble disposition; a quintessential lawmaker of the 21st century, very accessible to his people both at home and office. This qualities made Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) to join faith with his co - lawmakers, passed vote of confidence on him at his one year of Speakership.
Aside being a politician, Rt. Hon. Aniekan is an entrepreneur who has provided jobs to many Nigerians. He has keen interests in manufacturing, building and construction, Security and Surveillance, Hospitality and the founder of Rt.Hon. Aniekan Bassey Youth Empowerment Scheme.
Before venturing into politics, Rt. Hon. Bassey has founded and co-founded many business firms including Technocraft Contractors, a communications and securities outfit vested in sales and installations, Germain Products and Allied Services Ltd; leading producers of paints, resins, gum and vanishes, wood sealants, etc. He also has the Gem Grand Lodge; a reputable and award winning hospitality outfit and Technogem; a civil engineering, architectural and quantity surveying outfit, etc.
Heeded to the call of his people to serve them; the astute businessman cum politician contested and won the 2015 election into the State House of Assembly to represent the good people of Uruan State Constituency under the platform of the People's Democratic Party.
In the 6th Assembly, He has served as Deputy Majority Leader and Chairman House Services Committee; He was also the Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology. He sponsored and co-sponsored a good number of bills and motions as well as matters of urgent public importance with direct bearing on the people of Uruan and the state in general.
As member representating Uruan State Constiuency, he has Sponsored and Co-sponsored many bills and motions including Bill to protect the Physically Challenged Persons against all forms of Discrimination, Bill to establish Constituency Projects Development Fund, Bill to establish Building and civil engineering construction Materials Quality and Control Centre, Bill to establish Akwa Ibom State Utility Infrastructure Management and Compliance Agency, Bill to establish Akwa Ibom State Social Housing Scheme and Bill to establish Akwa Ibom State Youth Development Fund among others. Motions and matters of urgent public importance includes the need for Akwa Ibom State Government’s Involvement in Agricultural Value Chain to Ensure Sustainable Food Security and improve Foreign Earning and the need to curb the invasion/annexation of Uruan LGA by marauding militants from Cross River state, etc.
Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey as the Honourable Speaker so far, 31 people-oriented bills had been brought before the house, out of which 11 had been passed while others are at the various stages of legislation which is between 1st reading and public hearing/stakeholders engagement as at the time of this recording according to Rt. Hon. Aniefiok Denis, member representing Etinan State Constituency of the Assembly and its spokesman.
He said over 35 motions and matters of public importance have been raised on the floor of the 7th assembly and several committee reports submitted between inauguration to date.
One of the bills passed by the Assembly which has been signed into law by Governor Udom Emmanuel is the Violence Against Persons 2020 (Prohibition) bill which has received much applause because it came at a time reports of Sexual And Gender-Based Violence had continued to occupy the front burner of public discourse of recent and lastly
A Bill for a Law to establish the Akwa Ibom State fiscal Responsibility board for prudent management of the State resources and ensure greater accountability and transparency in fiscal operations and other matters connected therewith.
