AKHA RESOLVES TO END JUNGLE JUSTICE IN AKWA IBOM STATE

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in its plenary Thursday resolved to urge the Commissioner of police and other security agencies to investigate indices of Jungle Justice in Akwa Ibom State, especially the one at Ikot Oku Ikono market with a view to arresting and bringing perpetrators to book.
Mandate the ministry of information and Strategy, Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission, EARCOM to sensitize the minds of our youths to shun violence and jungle justice. an
Implore security agencies of government to keep watch and ensure that jungle justice is eliminated by ensuring that they do their jobs without fear or favour.
This follows a motion moved by Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo member representing Ikono State Constituency on the "Rising Case of Jungle Justice in Akwa in Akwa Ibom State: Urgent Need to End the Menace."
The House observed that Jungle Justice or mob justice is a form of arbitrary Public extrajudicial killing where an alleged criminal is humiliated, beaten or summarily executed by a crowd or vigilantes.
This practice has been on the rise in recent years, and is widely condemed to be evil, demonic, archaic and not befitting of any modern civilized society like ours, hence the need to end this dastard behavior in our State.
The motion ishows that jungle justice, primarily, is caused by the inability of the judicial system and law enforcement to deliver quality service that meet the judicial system and law enforcement to deliver quality service that meet the yearning of the populace.
Although, the House condemned in strong terms, every form of stealing, armed robbery, and criminal activity no matter how petty, and urges henceforth, crime suspects be duly handed over to government securities for onward investigation and prosecution.
no matter the magnitude of crime(s) committed, no one deserves to die in such cruel and hasty manners as witnessed in our society today in the name of Jungle Justice. Every killing must be sanctioned by a judicial process or proceedings.
Section 33 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended provides that person living in Nigeria, shall have right to life and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his or her life unless in execution of the sentence of a court of a criminal offence of which he has been found guilty.
According to the motion, the negative Public image and stigma the practice of jungle justice has brought to our dear State and Nation. This behavior has also brought unbearable pain and hardship on the families of victims and condescend to such level of arbitrary inflicting pains, main, and or kill fellow humans without recourse to the law.
The motion also states that it is a crime in the eyes of the law for anyone, irrespective of status to take laws into his hand and that the only person(s) or group permitted to apprehend, interrogate and or convict crime suspects is government security and the court of competent jurisdiction.
The admonished the public to give factual information to assist both the court and the law enforcement to carry out their duties.
Meanwhile, The Honorable speaker of the 7th Assembly Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey directed the Clerk of the House Mrs Mandu Umoren to communicate the House decision to the relevant agencies.
