Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly today Monday holds a stakeholders meeting seeking for a short and long term measures to decongest Ikot Ekpene Road/Ikpa Road Roundabout and other locations in Uyo metropolis and resolved to immediately disband all illegal parks in Uyo metropolis, Direct Ministry of Environment through the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Security Agencies in the state to orderly evacuate roadside traders within Uyo metropolis especially at Ibom Plaza, Ikot Ekpene Road by Udi Street and Ikpa Road Roundabout, Ikot Oku Ikono junction, Mbiabong, etc.


Similarly, it was resolved that the University of Uyo should relocate the Student's Shuttle Bus Park from Ikpa Road to the confinement of the institution Parameters fence, The State Ministry of transport to stop forthwith the loading and unloading AKS Urban Mass Transit at the plaza and it's environs, 


In a similar direction, the formation of a colourful Joint task force to comprise all security agencies in the state was approved to enforce show of force order to decongest these areas with effect from Wednesday 22nd September, 2021.


This meeting presided by the Chairman House Committee on Works and Transpot Rt. Hon. David Lawrence, member representing Eket State Constituency. In his address, he said the meeting was to find ways and means of clearing the congestion on those major spots in the metropolis particularly around Oron Road, Plaza, Ikot Ekpene Road, Ikpa Road Roundabout and Ikot Oku Ikono junction, looking at the long and short term measures coping the meanace. 


The lawmaker also added that for the good of the people and the state, every decision taken of the committee will be binding on every citizen, morning mostly Ikot Oku Ikono junction which is the gate way to the state, making sure that this issue is resolved in a way that lt will not cause crisis, the committee will sensitize people, give time to vacate and as well apply the full weight of the law to non-compliance.

Chief Whip and member representing Ini State Constituency Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekpenyong, Member representing Oron/Udung Uko State Constituency Rt. Hon. Effiong Bassey, State Commissioner of Police represented i/c Motor Traffic, Sector Commander of FRSC M.O. Olonisaje, Head of Crises mgt., Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps Iyokiya Gabriel, Chairman Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency Prince Ikim, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Transpot Mr.Nse Edem, DG Transport Council Mr. Morris Edet,  etc.


Also in attendance were leaders of National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW), RTEAN, TOAN, CG - Compliance and Monitoring, Chairman Anti - Tauting Team, 


It could be recalled that the motion " Urgent Need to Decongest Ikot Ekpene Road Ikpa Road Roundabout and other locations in Uyo metropolis" was moved at the floor of the House by Member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Victor Ekw beere and was referred to House Committee on Works and Transpot for further legislative actions.


At the Stakeholders meeting, it was observed that street trading at the plaza doesn't only impede the free flow of traffic rather promote crime, Child abuse and drugs trafficking and people exposed their lives to danger on daily basis as their dangerously attempt to move in between vehicles.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in its plenary today Tuesday 21st September, 2021 passes amended Traditional Rulers Law 2020 into law. this follows the report presented by Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudo - Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency on "A Bill for a Law to amend the Traditional Rulers Law 2020 and for other matters connected therewith." With the unanimous voiced vote support of members, the Bill was read the third time and passed to Law. According to the Bill, Amendment of Cap 134 LAKS 2000 is expected to correct the long title to Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers and tenure of the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers to pave way for second term after the first two years in office at the discreation of the Governor and on the approval of the House of Assembly.
