Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly yesterday in it's plenary passed a resolution mandating the State Ministry of Justice to collaborate with the State Law Reform Commission to immediately commence an examination of the laws of Akwa Ibom State with a view to identifying laws of Akwa Ibom State which are no longer in tune with contemporary realities and submit it findings to the house within one month
Similarly, the house urges the Executive arm of government to work with the house of Assembly to ensure that the obsolete laws are expunged the obsolete laws are expunged from the legal syatem.
This follows a motion moved by Hon. Esse Gerald Umoh Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency on the urgent need to revise and repeal obsolete laws of the State.
These laws include:
1. Akwa Ibom State Auctioneers Law of 21st June, 1917
2. Akwa Ibom State Agriculture Law of 1957
3. Akwa Ibom State Change of Title Law of 1st April,1930
4. Akwa Ibom State Cinematograph Law of 1st April, 1934
5. Akwa Ibom State Cattle (Taxation and Control) Law of 1st April, 1956
6. Akwa Ibom State Agriculture Law of 1st April, 1956
7. Akwa Ibom State Age of customary Law of 1st July 1956.
The motion noted that 34 years after creation of Akwa Ibom State, these obsolete laws continue to regulate the lives of the people as well as the Conduct of affairs of government.
Hon. Barr. Umoh was convinced that the continue retention of these outdated laws in our legal system is akin to putting a new wine in a n old wineskin, a situation that will cast Akwa Ibom State as a very unserious one, hell bent on remaining in a long distant past while other states have long moved on.
The motion further alarmed that these laws themselves as reflected in our Law books can be traced to colonial times
The lawmaker having being aware that legal reform are crucial to the progress, development and growth of any society in our fast changing world, he was conscious of the negative impact of these obsolete laws on the development of the state since creation.
