COMMISSIONING OF IKOT OKU IKONO FLYOVER

The Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Aniekan Bassey today accompanied the Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Ekaette Obot, National and State Legislators and other prominent sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom State and beyond to the official inauguration of Ikot Oku Ikono Flyover.
The Commissioning was done by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR), former President of Nigeria.
In his opening remarks, the Governor described the Flyover as a creative idea of which God can use the human mind to do in the face of scarcity and adversity.
He restated the commitment to deliver on his Completion Agenda which is the assurance that projects instituted by his administration in all the local government areas are completed before the expiration of his tenure.
He thanked the people for the tremendous support, solidarity and cooperation that he has enjoyed, an indication that the people have risen above biases.
Governor Emmanuel who described Akwa Ibom as an economic viable State judging from the different projects dotting the local government areas, maintained that a lot of employment will be created in the long run.
He charged the people to jealously guard the projects cited in their localities against vandalization and announced the donation of three Transformers to the Community where the Flyover is sited, to be delivered within one month with installation.
He also assured that the adjoining roads by the Flyover will be redesigned and reconstructed to ease transportation.
The Special Guest of Honour, former President Obasanjo in his speech commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for delivering on his electioneering promises to the people of the State and for being a prudent manager of resources in the era of scarcity.
He thanked the Governor for inviting him to the State and described the Flyover as a project worth celebrating especially as it is constructed on a road named after him, " Olusegun Obasanjo Way".
The former President thanked the people for supporting the Governor to succeed and charged them not to relent.
He also advised the people to always take care of every infrastructure and development in the State as they are assets meant to elevate them, noting that continuous vandalization is a loss to all.
According to the Commissioner for Works, Prof Eno Ibanga the Ikot Oku Ikono Flyover was awarded to Julius Begger Plc in 2019 to be completed within the space of two years.
It is adjudged the longest flyover in the State, with the following measurements and characteristics, 1km in length with 16m dual carriage way, 2.4km slim lane, 5m width lane, 1.5m pedestrians walkway, a roundabout, solar powered street lightings and lane drains which empty into a 2.2km outfall drain.
It is believed that the Ikot Oku Ikono Flyover which is constructed by the Governor will go a long way to reduce accidents hitherto experienced at that junction before now.
