Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Boundary & Conflict Resolution led by it's Chairman Hon. (Chief) Effiong Johnson member representing Mbo State Constituency on it's oversight function today Monday wades into boundary crises in Mbo and Okobo Local Government Area.
The visit was not unconnected to crises rocking Uko - Nteghe vs Enwang and Amamong vs Okopedi communities on Boundary matters.
At Mbo, the Local Government Council Chairman Hon. Asuquo Effiong Eyo, Vice Chairman Hon. Mary Joe Atting and the Council Secretary Hon. Okon Bassey Okon who were on ground to received the committee thank the state government and the 7th A'Ibom Assembly for listening to their plight, and the move seeking for restoration of peace in the local government.
Responding, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Rt.Hon. (Princess) Felicia Bassey in her remark during the town hall meeting sued both communities for peace and urges them to respect the inter-marriage relationship existing between both communities for where there's peace, people do not live in fear.
The committee through the Chairman Hon. (Chief) Johnson in his remark said that the assembly men were there for on the spot assessment to ascertain for themselves the level of damages done to both communities, received comment's and contributions from peoples, which will aid the committee in their report to the Government.
The council Boss Hon. Asuquo Effiong Eyo also remarked that there's no development where there's crisis, he disclosed that the crises has rocked both communities for about twenty five years now causing lost to many lives and properties; he therefore seek for Assembly's recommendation that will completely eradicate the problem.
Among those who spoke during the visit were the former Commissioner Engr. Ita Awak, the Village Head of Uko- Nteghe
- Ch. Asuquo Samuel, Youth Leader Okon Moses who prayed Governments for a lasting solution to salvage the communities from further occurrence.
Similarly at Okobo Local Government, the council Chairman Hon. Dr. Sylvester Effiong Attah, the Head of Service Mrs. Akpan, the council Secretary Mr. Pat. Effiong, the Paramount Ruler HRM. Edidem Ita Okokon, Nulge Chairman and others stakeholders were on hand to receive the Committee.
The committee Chairman Hon. (Chief) Effiong Johnson member representing Mbo State Constituency speaking after the on-the-spot inspection frowned over the wanton destruction of lives and properties in the area. the lawmaker said "Enough is Enough"; he further charged both community to remain resolute and allow peace to reign. Hon Chief Johnson also assured the affected communities that government will not hesitate to arrested, detained and prosecute anybody found wanting or attempting to interrupt peace in the Communities and further added that certificate of recognition of any traditional ruler found fingered in the crises will be revoked by the State Government.
The committee admonished both communities to uphold to the signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) instituted by Barr. Ekpenyong Ntekim for the reopening of the Community Secondary School Okopedi for the interest of the younger generation while waiting for the Committee's report for a lasting solution.
Earlier, the council Boss in his welcome address, thank the State Governor His Excellency Mr. Udom Emmanuel for his quick intervention on the crises, the State Commission of Police for the timely intervention and the 7th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for mediating the conflict between the people of Amamong and Okopedi Communities. he described the upsurge as a very serious threat to the people of local government. Hon. Attah also added that the crises has led to the closure of Community Secondary School Okopedi for the fear of losing of more lives.
speaking further, the council helmsman disclosed that the assembly's continuous interface with the people will restore peace and put an end to the community crisis. He said that there's need to bring back life to schools and people of the community. Hon. Attah intimated the committee that after several trials of the council and the traditional rulers to meditate, lastly both communities agreed and signed memorandum of understanding for the reopening of the community Secondary School, Okopedi as instituted by Barr. Ekpenyong Ntekim for the interest of the people.
