Akwa Ibom State House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, under the Chairmanship of Rt. Hon. Mark Esset, member representing Nsit Atai State Constituency Wednesday met with 31 Local Governments Chairmen of the state at the conference of the Assembly to bring to notice those Constitutional responsibilities expected of them.
According to the committee chairman, the familiarization meeting which was part of the oversight function of the committee is empowered by section 4(7) of the Nigerian Constitution and order 9 rule 20 of the Assembly Standing Order to oversight the activities of the local government ranging from it's finance to general Administration.
The Committee has charged elected council Chairpersons to give reference to people-oriented policies and programs that will make impact of government greatly felt at the grassroot "I urge you to see your position as a call to service and strive to satisfy the confidence repose on you by your people by giving them people-oriented leadership, with a determination to leave a legacy that will speak for you even after your tenure."
He also assured Local Government helmsman in the state of the House readiness to attend to petition and complains that arises from the tier without fear or favour and that Emphasis was made on the role of the House Committee to play a supervisory role in the LG administration as powered by Law. The House through the Committee charged elected council chairpersons to be acquainted with the Local Government Administrative Law 2017 so they avoid pitfalls while discharging their duties.
The Committee also announced that its will soon commence quarterly inspection of the Local Government Councils to assess the level of success, challenges, and to consider the possible areas we can assist in the discharge of duties.
Speaking on behalf of the 31 Chairpersons in the state, the ALGON Chairman, Hon. Nnamso Robson, Executive Chairman, Esit Eket LGA said as Chairman in the past six years, there were perceived rancour in that tier of Government which was not necessary and thereby seeking a good working relationship with every authorities.
