A Bill for a Law for Establishment and Administration of the Customary Court in Akwa Ibom State and for Matters connected therewith receives the nod of the House of Assembly.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Thursday passed into law A Bill for a law for Establishment and Administration of the Customary Court in Akwa Ibom State and for matters connected therewith. The of this Bill follows the adoption of the report presented by the Chairman House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and public petitions Hon. (Barr.) Victor Patrick Ekwere representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency to the House on 22nd December, 2020.
It could be recalled that the House at her sitting on Tuesday, 18th Feb 2020, this Bill was read the second time and committed to the House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and public petitions for scrutiny.
This bill which is primarily among others to enable legal practitioners to administer the Court and deploy their expertise in settlement of disputes, interpretation and application of the Rule of Law to the customs and traditions of our local community and make the State Government to pay more attention to the welfare and development of our grassroots in the State.
According to the report, the committee in tune with the current legislative practice held a public hearing on Friday, 26th June, 2020 to have a holistic view and get inputs from stakeholders including Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ministry of Justice, Office of the Chief Judge, Judiciary, Nigeria Bar Association, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs AKSACA, Ministry of Health, Hospital Management Board, Traditional Rulers Council, Local Government Service Commission, Civil Liberty Organization, Association of Local Government of Nigeria and the public at large.
The committee observed that passing this Bill into law will ensure access to Justice at the grassroots in our Local Government Area, guarantee quick dispensation of Justice and reconciliation of the people in our communities as well as ushering an era of transparent Justice administration.
The Hon. Speaker of the 7th Assembly, Rt. Hon Aniekan Bassey thereafter directed the Clerk of the House Mrs. Mandu Umoren to communicate the His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel for accent.
