The Speaker AKHA Remarks on #Endsars Protest and Black Tuesday at the Plenary

Rt.Hon. Aniekan Bassey Speaker Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Tuesday's plenary before paying last respect to the departed souls during the #EndSars Protest remarked on the incident that took place on Tuesday 20th October, 2020 where lives of many unarmed young Nigerian were cut short during their agitation for good governance and better life through the #EndSars protest and described it as a watershed in our nation's history.

Speaker Bassey on behalf of all members of the 7th Assembly commend His Excellency Gov. Udom Emmanuel for setting up a panel of Investigation to investigate incidences of police brutality in the State and appeal to those affected, who are seeking redress, to approach this panel for necessary action.

The Speaker further joined millions of Nigerians to conderm the killing of our innocent and unarmed youths who were exercising their constitutional rights to protest and demand for good governance and a better life. He particularly conderm the massacre at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria by inconsiderate and insensitive security operatives and noted that it was an avoidable tragedy if only humanity had been the covering banner of the security operatives at the moment. He thereby opined that those involved in police brutality and other crimes against humanity be brought to justice.

The Assembly helmsman  deeply sympathize with the families of the slained heros and pray for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the caused of the peaceful protest. He however, urged the youths to exercise restraint and allow measures put in place by government to prevail and that they should give peace a chance while making legitimate demands for we cannot afford to suffer more losses.

Similarly, The Speaker remarked that no nation thrives in acrimony and that the destruction of public and private property will only threaten Nigeria Peace, Unity, development and progress rather the call for institutional reforms, which will certainly strengthen good governance, can be pursued through dialogue and other non violent methods.

Moreso, Hon. Aniekan Bassey Thank youths of the State for being part of the protest in a responsible manner, he said this shows to the world that peace resides in Akwa Ibom State.

Finally, the speaker added that the time is now for us as a nation to sit together, dialogue and come up with a new constitution that will allow for true federalism and a workable governance structure that will accommodate all issues causing friction in our polity.
