AKHA Receives A Bill for a Law to Establish And Regulate Akwa Ibom State Official Symbols, And for other matters connected therewith.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in it's plenary today receives a Bill tittled "A Bill for a Law to Establish And Regulate Akwa Ibom State Official Symbols, And for other matters connected therewith."

This Executive Bill Executive Bill from Governor Udom Emmanuel for enactment into law on the need for Akwa Ibom State  to have her official symbols sponsored by the House Leader, Rt Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan and member representating Oruk Anam State Constituency.

Presenting at the floor of the House,  the House Leader in his presentation said that the Bill shall establish the official symbol of the State to include the State Anthem, State Flag, State Coat of Arms, Creed, and Slogan. 

According to the bill, the Unity Anthem which has a special import for the people of the state shall be sung at state functions and other special occasions, while the state flag shall be one of the symbols of government and people of the state to be exhibited or flown in all public places in the state. 

According to the bill, the Coat of Arms shall consist of colours and designs representing  the distinctive ideals and aspirations of the the people of Akwa Ibom  and will be displayed in all public places in the state wherever appropriate alongside the National Coat of Arms of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 

According to the Bill, the State Creed which shall consist of the wordings and phrases as shall be published in the State official Gazette, shall be a solidarity pledge that will have significance and commitment for the people and will be recited at all public functions in the state. 

Similarly, the State Slogan according to the bill shall be "Land of Promise", while the Creed shall be the Dakkada Creed. 

The bill which was given accelerated legislative process, passed through first and second reading today and the Speaker Rt Hon Aniekan Bassey in his ruling referred it to the House Committee on Information which is to report back to the House in two days. 


Deliberating on the Bill, the Deputy House Leader, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Aniefiok Dennis, member representating Etinan State constituency in his presentation said that the bill is in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Coat of Arm Act of 1996, Chapter 148, Section 4 Sub Section 2.

The Chief Whip, Rt.Hon. Emmanuel Ekpenyong and member representating Ini State Constituency aligned himself with the Bill and described it as a good one, he thank his Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel for bringing up the Bill and described the governor as a Visionary Leader that has foresight especially as the State is marking its 33rd anniversary on September 23, 2020.


The Deputy Chief Whip Rt. Hon. (Otuekong) Nse Essien and member representating Onna State Constituency having accessed the components symbols of the Bill described it as authority of Akwa Ibom people.


Rt.Hon. Uduak Odudo, member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency in his presentation said that  If the bill is passed into law, it will act as an Identity frame work for Akwa Ibom people and also generate revenue to the State.

Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Usoro Akpanusoh member representing Esit Eket/ Ibeno State Constituency described the Bill as being very apt and Long overdue, a Pathfinder of unity for integration of the Ibibios, Annang, Eket, Oron and the Obolos into one fold to complement that Akwa Ibom is one united State, one family and under one leadership 

Charity Ido, member representing Ukanafun State constituency said that the bill when passed will foster peace, unity, progress and absorb consciousness in the State.


Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem member representating Itu added that the bill will differentiate the dignity and culture of Akwa Ibom people from other tribes.

Meanwhile the House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.
